The best things in life are food and sex, in that order. You need food to have sex don’t you? Off of Wilshire Blvd in Santa Monica is Melisse, the best restaurant in Los Angeles. It’s orgasmic. Its culinary foundation is classical French and it’s superb. When going to fine dining you are in for a good 3-4 hour performance. Just like the theatre, symphony or opera, not every show or performance is grand. However, Melisse hits every note with perfect harmony. The exquisite flavors of the dishes, beautifully presented food, deep wine cellar and the people who make it happen, (the attentive and knowledgable wait staff and chefs) create an evening that will impress the most sophisticated palate.
Melisse's amazing cuisine is served in a seventies retro sophisticated atmosphere. My companions Nicki, Natalie and I ordered the sampling menu, which offers 4 courses for $95. You get to select from sexy starters like lobster bisque or Alaskan King crab legs. You won’t go hungry throughout the night as you are presented with at least 3 amuse-bouche, or tiny sized appetizers, that are wonderful. Fresh baked breads are passed out freely. The night we went they had a wild game menu, which consisted of Scottish Grouse, pheasants and other hunting birds.
For the first course I enjoyed the sweet corn ravioli with summer truffles. For the second course I had the herbed encrusted Dover sole. The meat course consisted of the Scottish pheasant and for dessert the Sticky Toffee pudding was highly successful. The wine was wonderful, the night was warn and breezy.
If you bring a date here she may not be your queen yet, but she will regard you as a “king” or “the man” for sure. Just so you know, women do prefer that you cook for them rather than take them to a restaurant that is hard to get into, hip or expensive. Take her to this when you are courting her, but not within the first three dates. Why? She may think you’re loaded and even if you are, do you want to be with a woman who only wants you for your wallet?
I have nothing bad to say about Melisse. It’s fairly expensive, but well worth it. It was a 4 hour tour of some of the greatest food I have eaten in Los Angeles. Fine dining at its best.
