Tucked away in yet another strip mall in Studio City, is a small, moderately priced dynamite sushi restaurant called Sushi 101. There are several reasons why I find this eatery dandy. The food is great, the wait staff friendly and they have a customized meal plan based on a traditional 8-10 course Japanese meal called KAISEKI. You have to give the chef about a week’s notice, but it’s totally Dead Sexy! He will ask you if you don’t like certain sushi or meats and tailor create an off menu meal that will be sure to really impress your date. (If you do this, make sure you find out what your date is allergic to or doesn’t like.) Another thing that makes this meal very special, is that you get reserved seating at the sushi bar and your own custom menus with your names and date of the meal. The menu pictured above was for the $50 per person menu. There are 3 price ranges to KAISEKI, $50, $75 or $100 per person. This does not include booze and tip. It’s well worth it, I tell you.

Let’s talk about the lovely fish, shall we? Sushi 101 is best known for its simple sushi. On the night I was there with my lovely date, we shared 11 dishes (and four large beers.) They ranged from delights like Spanish mackerel and jumbo fresh sweet shrimp to grilled scallops and sake-soaked, baked, black cod. In order to serve the freshest, tastiest shrimp, the restaurant keeps them alive in a cooler and gets them as needed. All the dishes were amazing. I was expecting this sushi feast to be in the neighborhood of close to $200. Nope. For $100 even, it was truly a bargain. One tip: don’t go there for the cut rolls; they have too much rice and not enough fish. Trust the chef's recommendations and be sure to sample some of the specials that are written on the dry eraser board. Our meal was so good, we returned six days later for KAISEKI.

Be sure to check out Sushi 101. It's the perfect place for intimate meals with a gal or a dinner party with another couple.
