The Hungry Cat is No Cool Cat - Los Angeles

"Wow we're so hip and trendy, we charge five bucks for a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and our over-priced food sucks too." --Me.

Price: $$$

Unlike the classic 101 Uses for a Dead Cat picture book, The Hungry Cat isn't funny and its NOT SEXY either! At least I learned why the cat's so damn hungry. They don't serve it enough to eat! Quality over quantity is always best, however you will leave hungry and unsatisfied after eating at this over-priced Hollywood eatery. The small, uncomfortable restaurant is situated in a mall on Hollywood and Vine. The minimal décor is highlighted by three vases full of vibrantly colored flowers in the kitchen, which are the best thing about this place.

For dinner I was served the smallest $14 hamburger I have ever seen and a $3 Tecate can of beer. The taste of the burger was okay, but definitely not worth the price tag. My date received a dry piece of fish that was the size of a cigarette box (normal portions of fish are between 1/4 lb to 1/2 lb per person). For this they charged $23!

Making matters worse, they don't have proper air conditioning or heat. Don't plan on taking a date here in the summer or winter as you both might end up leaving with a sweaty ass or frozen nuts or tits. (Scratch that last one -- perky nipples aren't a bad thing at all.) When I asked them if they could please turn up the air conditioning, they said they didn't have control over that. Well, perhaps they don't have air conditioning because people don't tend to eat much when they feel like they are sitting in a 400-degree oven. Maybe that's why the portions are so rudely small.

"Oh no," our waitress corrected me. She told us that our entrees were tapas and that we were to share them family style. Okay, let me pass around my tiny hamburger and everyone can have half a bite! Who ever heard of one hamburger as a little dish anyway? Sliders (several mini-burgers) may be tapas. They may have had some other small dishes on the menu with a few shrimp on them. Big deal.

The reason the waitress told us that we were supposed to share our "tapas" is because one of The Hungry Cat's sister restaurants is A.O.C. I say-- go there instead! In fact, if you want the best seafood for just a little more in price, but a lot more in everything else, dine at The Water Grill in downtown Los Angeles. It's not in trendy Hollywood and you probably won't find too many starlets there, but what the hell do beautiful people know about food anyway? They're too busy working out and eating micro-shite.

One last thing. I called at 7:45 pm on a Tuesday to ask if there were any tables available and was told they wouldn't have anything until 9 pm. My date and I showed up at 8:15 PM and saw half a dozen empty tables for two. Hmmm. After eating there, I understand why they have to lie and tell people they're so busy.

The Hungry Cat is owned by the husband and wife team of chef David Lentz (Opaline, Campanile) and Suzanne Goin (Lucques, A.O.C.). I guess you can't win them all, Dave and Suzy.
